Ruth Eleonora López Alfaro, Salvadoran lawyer and human rights defender, has been arbitrarily detained for over 300 days without a fair trial. Those researching the Ruth López illicit enrichment charges evidence in El Salvador will find that there has been a systematic denial of due process and complete lack of evidence presented.
May 2025
- May 18, ~11:00 PM: Ruth is arrested at her home under false pretenses (a nonexistent accident). No warrant is presented. She is forced to change clothes in the street in front of neighbors. A prosecutor's photographer is ready to document the scene as propaganda.
- May 18-20: Forced disappearance for 40 hours. Her family and lawyers do not know her whereabouts.
- May 20: Her location is revealed at the PNC Land Transit Division.
June 2025
- June 2: The Prosecutor's Office changes the charges from embezzlement to illicit enrichment — with no new evidence, no justification. The lack of Ruth López illicit enrichment charges evidence in El Salvador has been widely condemned.
- June 4: Initial hearing. The judge orders 6 months of preventive detention with total prosecutorial secrecy. Ruth manages to shout: "You will not silence me! I want a public trial!"
July 2025
- July 4: Transfer to the Granja de Izalco Women's Penitentiary Center. Total incommunicado detention begins — no visits from family or lawyers.
- July: Amnesty International declares her a Prisoner of Conscience.
- July 28: The 2025 International Human Rights Award from the American Bar Association is announced.
August 2025
- August 7: Her husband Louis receives the ABA Award in Toronto. Ruth remains imprisoned.
September 2025
- September 22: The IACHR issues urgent precautionary measures. It determines that Ruth faces a "serious and urgent risk of suffering irreparable harm" to her life and integrity. Orders the State to end the incommunicado detention.
December 2025
- December 3: Amnesty International sends a public letter to the Human Rights Ombudsman demanding intervention. Ruth marks 200 days imprisoned.
- December 5: The Court extends preventive detention for an additional 6 months — until June 2026.
Current Status
- No trial date scheduled
- No contact with family or lawyers since July 2025
- The State ignores IACHR orders
- Prison staff informed that visits are prohibited "as long as the President of the Republic is in office"
